About Quartz
Silicon dioxide is mostly obtained by mining, including sand mining and purification of quartz. Quartz, also known as silica, is an oxide of silicon with the chemical formula SiO2.
The commercial use of silicon dioxide (sand) occurs in the construction industry, e.g. for the production of concrete. The high melting point of Quartz enables it to be used in applications such as iron casting. Quartz is used in making quartz crucibles that are used in the laboratories for performing chemical reactions and tests.
