About Dimethyl sulfoxide
Dimethyl sulfoxide also known as DMSO is a 2-carbon sulfoxide in which the sulfur atom has two methyl substituents. It is a widely used solvent that is miscible with water and a wide range of organic solvents. Dimethyl sulfoxide is produced industrially from dimethyl sulfide, a by-product of the Kraft process, by oxidation with oxygen or nitrogen dioxide.
DMSO is a laboratory and industrial solvent for many gases, synthetic fibers, paint, hydrocarbons, salts, and natural products. It is used for its various therapeutic and pharmaceutical properties, such as anti-inflammatory, local and systemic analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral.
