About 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate
2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate or HEMA is an organic compound that is a colorless viscous liquid which readily polymerizes. It is an ester of methacrylic acid, soluble in water and has relatively low volatility.
2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate is used in the preparation of solid polymers, acrylic dispersions, and polymer solutions, which are used in various industries. It is often used to increase the hydrophobicity or surface adhesion of polymers and polymer-based materials such as specialty coatings, resins, adhesives, printing inks, and acrylic plastics. 2-HEMA was one of the first materials to be used in the manufacture of soft contact lenses.
